You are not turning to bone BUT your body does react to the constant pressure that it is under.
The role of the skeletal muscular system is to provide support and movement through joints. To achieve this most of our muscles cross over a joint and are joined to the bones at either ends by tendons.
Tendons are structures that allows some stretch but they have receptors which create a reflex and pull the muscle back from over stretching. These tendons join the muscle to the bone at either end, with the joint placed somewhere in-between. When a load is applied the muscle does work and applies a tensile force against the load. When the tensile force exceeds the load, we have movement!
The nature of this load, gravity is also a load against the body, means the body is always at work. Whether it be making small adjustments for postural changes or for larger explosive movements, there is always load against the body.
The body has mechanisms that provide nutrition for our tissues and turn them so they remain healthy. Quite often though our body makes the best decisions on one hand but it is detrimental on the other. It’s a catch twenty-two!
Here is why we end up with Calcified Tendons:
- The load is constant and excessive and the body lays down bone matrix over the tendon to adjust to the extra strain. This is literally so that the tendon stays attached to the bone.
The upside to this is that the tendon is reinforced with the additional bone matrix but the downside is that the tendon is now not as subtle and elastic. Over time these deposits build up and this limits our range of movement of the joint. This can give you the feeling of being stiff, as the joints are not able to have a free and mobile range.
However, there are also some other issues that are taking place here that often get overlooked!
The skeletal muscle works in a very complex way so let’s keep it simple. The contractile components of the muscle fibres operate on calcium reservoirs that influence binding sites to shorten your muscles and when the calcium is flushed out they allow them to lengthen. What occurs is that we are constantly stimulating these reservoirs to release calcium and this results in muscles that have only ever half relaxed. See the calcium need to be flushed away from the binding sites so that they let go and relax back to a natural state. It is like extending your arm but you realise it still has tension in the muscle ready to flex it again.
What happens is we are completely overactive and never completely relax. Most people do not even get enough sleep to relax and allow the body to flush out the excess calcium from the flood gates being open. We have muscles that are over tensile as they are not fully relaxed before getting another signal and the calcium to contract.
There is now pooling of calcium in the muscles and incomplete relaxation of the muscle, combined with the strain of added load to the tendons and the calcium also being used to strengthen the tendons. Our joints are supposed to be fluid and freely mobile. Does this make you feel tight and contracted, rather than mobile? Of course it does!
How do we combat this?
It is part of our design and the way of the world at the moment so it is a little difficult to get the much needed rest.
We are mostly magnesium deficient and this also combats the excess calcium! Yes, as simple as increasing your magnesium exposure. What is meant by this is that it should be in our water, rubbed on after a shower and in our foods.
There is an outstanding machine that we have introduced that works on both the calcium deposits in the muscle fibres as well as the calcium on the tendons. We have introduced this therapy into our repertoire as it is safe, effective, quick and it provides a solution to immobile joints.
Our aim, as always, is to release calcium build up to mobilise joints and to allow muscles to return to a completely relaxed position ready for full and complete activation.
